Pembroke’s 41 Lothbury reimagines heritage for today’s workplace

In the heart of the City of London, opposite the Bank of England, 41 Lothbury stands as a compelling example of how a historic building can be thoughtfully reimagined for the needs of modern working.

Completed in 2025, the Grade II‑listed landmark has been transformed into a sustainable, people‑centered workplace that blends its remarkable heritage with contemporary design, technology and wellbeing. Rather than simply marking the end of a construction journey, 41 Lothbury now acts as a living case study for how heritage buildings can support evolving expectations of the office. The project brings together over 120,000 sq ft of refurbished workspace, a restored banking hall, and a generous suite of amenities – all shaped by Pembroke’s people‑first design philosophy.

At its core, the repositioning opens the building to new ways of working. The once‑formal banking hall has been transformed into a vibrant arrival experience and social hub, framed by original stone columns and complemented by modern interventions such as a new café, expanded breakout areas and a bespoke Jason Bruges light installation.

Across the upper floors, 8,000 sq ft of landscaped terraces offer additional space for collaboration, quiet work or simply taking in views across the Square Mile – including a communal roof terrace on Level 8. Inside, a mix of collaboration rooms, quiet zones, huddle spaces and cocooning desks ensures choice and comfort for different working styles.

Health and wellbeing remain central throughout. The building incorporates a 1,350 sq ft fitness studio, extensive end‑of‑trip facilities with dedicated drying rooms, lockers and cycle storage, and essential support spaces such as a parents’ room, multi‑faith room and quiet work areas. Supported by advanced CO₂‑sensing fresh‑air systems and fully integrated smart technology, the result is a workplace that prioritizes the experience and productivity of the people who use it every day.

Sustainability has been embedded from the outset. Through adaptive reuse of the existing structure and the introduction of an all‑electric MEP system, the project achieves 78% lower embodied carbon than a typical new build. 41 Lothbury is also targeting BREEAM Excellent, NABERS and WiredScore Platinum certifications, demonstrating how even the most historically significant buildings can align with contemporary environmental expectations.

This approach has delivered tangible value for international law firm Addleshaw Goddard, who now occupy the entire building on a long‑term lease. With four floors dedicated to client hospitality, events and meeting spaces, the building supports a fully integrated working environment tailored to the needs of their teams and clients.
