Narwhal, 2024,
Jonathan Delafield Cook | b. 1965, in London, England
Jonathan Delafield Cook creates exquisitely detailed charcoal drawings of animals. In Narwhal, Cook employs the exacting language of scientific illustration, rendering the marine mammal from the side on a white background in life size. Instead of working from a single photograph, Cook sifts through and unites multiple photographic sources to create a composite that imbues the animal with a distinct personality. Pembroke’s narwhal seems to smile wryly as he swims by.
Nature 2 Series, 2015,
Julian Opie | b. 1958 in London, England
In this series, Julian Opie uses lenticular printing to produce the illusion of movement. Each lenticular panel is comprised of many rows of lenses. For Opie’s panels, approximately twenty related images are sliced into strips, interlaced with one another, and printed on the back of each panel. The resulting piece shows different images at different angles, creating the illusion of boats rocking and fish swimming as each viewer walks by.
Marshes Series, 2015,
Neal Rantoul | b. 1951
Neal Rantoul is an accomplished landscape photographer who has been working and teaching in Boston for forty years. In his series Marshes, Rantoul chartered a Cessna 172 to photograph the tidal estuaries north of Boston across the seasons. To capture these images, Rantoul hangs out an open window – at 100 mph – to capture the intricacies of the arteries that keep the tidal ecosystems alive.
